UFC 299 Co-Main Event

Dana White has announced the five-round matchup between Dustin Poirier and Benoit Saint-Denis for UFC 299 in Miami. What does this matchup hold for the mama circuit? Continue reading to find out!

When Dustin Poirier fights the rapidly improving Benoit Saint-Denis in the co-main event of UFC 299, he will have to be obliged to call for him to give a rising lightweight contender a chance.

Former interim champion Poirier will square off against Saint-Denis in a five-round fight on the March 9 card at Kaseya Centre in Miami. The main card will air on pay-per-view after preliminary action on ESPN and ESPN+. This information was revealed by UFC CEO Dana White on Sunday.

Poirier ranked No. 4 in the most recent lightweight rankings from USA TODAY Sports and MMA Junkie, will look to bounce back from losing their “BMF” title match at UFC 291 this past August by second-round knockout to Justin Gaethje. “The Diamond” has never experienced back-to-back defeats in a fight.

No. 13 Saint-Denis will look to continue his winning run of five bouts in the octagon, all of which have ended in stoppages. The most recent of those occurred at UFC 295 in November, when he spectacularly kicked Matt Frevola out of the first round.

Headline of the event is a bantamweight title clash between Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera. The card also includes high-profile matchups such as Dustin Poirier facing off against Benoit Saint-Denis, Gilbert Burns taking on Jack Della Maddalena, and Song Yadong going up against Petr Yan. Other notable contests include Kevin Holland versus Michael Page, Maycee Barber against Katlyn Chookagian, Jailton Almeida versus Curtis Blaydes, Asu Almabaev facing CJ Vergara, Rafael dos Anjos taking on Mateusz Gamrot, Pedro Munhoz squaring off against Kyler Phillips, and Lauren Murphy challenging Karine Silva.
