At the post-fight news conference, Poirier expressed to that his goal had been to become the world champion. He questioned what else he was fighting for, acknowledging that while he loved the thrill of fighting and was possibly addicted to it, money was not a concern for him.

Poirier mentioned that he and his family were well-off and didn’t need the money. Although money is great, he emphasized that his health comes first. He questioned his motivation, wondering if he was still fighting to become the champion again and whether he would even get that opportunity, even if he went on a winning streak. He reflected on how challenging it had been to climb that mountain so many times. At 35, Poirier is always in the mix as a top contender and showcased his elite skills in the main event against Makhachev (26-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC) at Prudential Center. However, this fight marked his third unsuccessful title defense.

He reflected on his long career, noting that while some might not consider 35 old, he has 50 fights under his belt. He mentioned starting to fight at 17 and having his first cage fight at 18, with 10 additional fights not listed on his record. He emphasized the need to take his time to think things over, talk to his family and coaches, and figure out his next steps. He admitted that this could potentially be his last fight, but he needs to return home to understand what he’s still fighting for.
