Arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history, Jones responded to Aspinall’s request on Monday night on X (formerly Twitter) by demanding that the UFC takeaway Jones’ title belt, elevate him to the position of undisputed champion, and have him defend it against Stipe Miocic while Jones is still sidelined due to injury.
Jon Jones stated that he had faced the toughest competition in the world for 15 years. He mentioned sustaining a major injury during camp for a title defense, which required surgery, marking the first time in his career. He addressed newcomers requesting his championship to be stripped, finding it amusing that they had zero wins over legends, zero title defenses, and were already trying to influence Dana. In his 15-year career, he observed numerous individuals who were supposed to be the next big thing, emphasizing that there had only been one Jon Jones, and he urged people to never forget that.
Jones was expected to make a comeback on November 11 in the main event of UFC 295, having defeated Ciryl Gane in March to win the vacant UFC heavyweight title. But Jones tore his pectoral muscle during training, forcing him to withdraw two weeks before his title match against Miocic.
In retaliation, the UFC scheduled a temporary championship match between Sergei Pavlovich and Aspinall, in which Aspinall prevailed via first-round knockout.
In contrast to custom, the UFC has no plans to hold a unification match. Aspinall is not happy with the promotion’s intention to keep the Jones-Miocic fight going.
