Cejudo’s Criticism Towards Aspinall’s Interim Title Celebration

Henry Cejudo objects to Daniel Cormier’s comparison of his gold medal from the Olympics to Tom Aspinall’s provisional title. What is the reason behind his criticism towards the title celebration? Continue reading to find out!

After Aspinall defeated Sergei Pavlovich to win the interim heavyweight title at UFC 295, Cejudo made fun of the fighter for shedding tears. Cejudo contended that the interim title was an overreaction and that it doesn’t have the same authority as an uncontested title.

Daniel Cormier intervened on behalf of Aspinall. Aspinall, like Cejudo, devoted his entire life to a single objective, so it was only fitting that he should feel overwhelmed by his unexpected achievement.

Daniel Cormier expressed his disagreement with Henry Cejudo’s opinion on Tom Aspinall becoming emotional after winning the interim UFC championship. Cormier likes Cejudo but believes Cejudo is mistaken in saying that Aspinall’s emotional response is not justified because it’s not the “real belt.” Cormier argues that Cejudo, despite being a fantastic athlete and UFC champion, was not specifically groomed for the UFC championship; instead, he was groomed for Olympic wrestling, which he successfully achieved. Cormier contends that Aspinall’s emotional reaction is genuine and compatible to Cejudo’s emotional response when winning the Olympic gold medal. Cormier emphasizes that, interim title or not, Aspinall earned the belt, and the emotional significance is as real for him as winning the Olympic gold was for Cejudo in Beijing.

Cejudo responded to Daniel Cormier’s comments on Twitter, noting that Cormier, his Olympic teammate, seemed critical. Cejudo acknowledged Cormier’s shift in stance, stating that Cormier had turned against the greatest combat athlete of all time. Despite this, Cejudo expressed appreciation for it. He argued that if he had won an Olympic silver medal, he wouldn’t have displayed the same level of emotion, emphasizing the importance of representing the country.

When Cormier compared Cejudo’s Olympic gold medal victory to Aspinall’s provisional title, Cejudo snapped back, stating that the two achievements couldn’t be discussed together.

Cejudo went on to explain his perspective on interim belts, stating that they merely signify being the No. 1 contender. He addressed those who find this viewpoint disagreeable, including Tom Aspinall, remarking that Aspinall’s emotional reaction was excessive. Cejudo advised saving tears for a victory over someone like Jon Jones, the perceived greatest of all time, to truly claim the title of world champion. While congratulating Tom, Cejudo reiterated his belief that interim belts hold little significance.

He addressed Daniel Cormier, making a sarcastic remark about his two chins. He commented on the belt not fitting around Cormier’s waist but being considered undisputed nonetheless. He then congratulated Tom for being the best “Side-Chick” in the UFC.
