Oliveira tweeted two pictures of the gash and a short video of his apology shortly after UFC CEO Dana White verified Alexander Volkanovski intervention. He was wearing a bandage on his left brow in the video.
Oliveira apologized in Portuguese, saying that everyone should know everything.
White said the injury happened on Tuesday, the day before Oliveira was scheduled to fly to Yas Island in Abu Dhabi for his title fight on October 21. White said Oliveira’s crew may have made a mistake by trying to solve the issue through their connections as opposed to the UFC’s.
White mentioned on Tuesday at a DWCS 66 post-fight news conference that they were not contacted by them. He mentioned that if they had been informed, they could have arranged for him to visit a plastic surgeon, who would have performed the stitching from inside out, ensuring the procedure was done correctly. White expressed his frustration that the individuals in question typically did not contact them promptly when something like this occurred. Instead, they only reached out after the situation had already been addressed with stitches. However, White also acknowledged the potential reluctance on the part of the person involved to take the risk of getting a shot like this.
33-year-old Oliveira has won 12 of his last 13 fights, losing only to Makhachev at UFC 280 in October 2022. Oliveira is a former champion who has victories over Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, and more.
