Chris Weidman’s Return Bout At UFC 292

Seems like Chad just can’t catch a break. First, he’s out with a bum leg, and now, surprise surprise, his leg’s acting up again after some “gentle” kicks. Someone give this guy a bubble wrap suit, pronto.

Shouldn’t there have been proper checks before sending a fighter who already had an injury back to competing? Did his injury give Brad Tavares an easy win? Continue reading to find out!

After a lengthy recovery period due to a horrific right leg break, the former UFC middleweight champion started competing again earlier this month. Weidman’s 15-minute fight with Brad Tavares in Boston for his rematch was plagued by leg kicks and ended in a unanimous decision for Tavares.

To determine how much damage was done during the fight, Weidman underwent testing on both of his legs. He was concerned that there might be a ligament tear. Weidman claims that even if the findings of his testing were positive in some ways, he did not acquire a full medical clearance.

The former UFC middleweight champion returned to the octagon to compete against Brad Tavares in Boston. Little did the fighter know that after this match he would be leaving the octagon with an injured leg and a defeat on his first match.

Seems like Chad just can’t catch a break. First, he’s out with a bum leg, and now, surprise surprise, his leg’s acting up again after some “gentle” kicks. Someone give this guy a bubble wrap suit, pronto.

To determine how much damage was done during the fight, Weidman underwent testing on both of his legs. He was concerned that there might be a ligament tear. Weidman claims that even if the findings of his testing were positive in some ways, he did not acquire a full medical clearance.

Weidman mentioned on the “Won’t Back Down” podcast that he had undergone MRIs on his tibia and fibula on both legs, as well as on both of his knees. He also mentioned that X-rays were taken, and he had been awaiting the results. He stated that the results were received and indicated that there were no tears in any of the ligaments, including the ACL, LCL, MCL, and PCL. He expressed gratitude for this outcome and mentioned that his ligaments were in good condition.

Weidman further explained that he did, however, sustain a fracture on his left leg. He believed that the fracture occurred when his opponent delivered a leg kick, prompting him to switch to a southpaw stance to adapt to the situation. He specified that the fracture was located on the head of his tibia, below his left knee. He conveyed that the recovery process would be relatively short, allowing him to resume training in approximately one month

According to Weidman, the recovery period is not extensive, spanning just four weeks.
Dana White has called for Weidman to retire, but he says he’s not quite ready to call it quits at 39. Back-to-back defeats were noted by the defeat to Tavares, but perhaps more significantly, two battles left Weidman with injuries to his legs.

Are the injuries this time not that serious or is it just Weidman’s claim so that he doesn’t have to retire soon? Should these injuries and Dana White’s continuous calls for him to retire be signs enough for him that his time has come? If he hadn’t had that previous injury do you think the results of the match would have been in Chris’s favor? Do let us know about your thoughts in the comment section!
