During UFC 291, Stephen Thompson was set to make his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon against Brazil’s Michel Pereira. Unfortunately, the fight had to be canceled on the eve of the event because Pereira failed to meet the welterweight limit by three pounds.

Surprisingly, it was Thompson who decided not to proceed with a catchweight bout.
Despite completing an entire training camp, fulfilling all fight week obligations, and successfully gaining weight on Friday morning, Thompson did not receive any compensation for his efforts. In a recent conversation with Ariel Helwani, Thompson confirmed that the situation remains unchanged. Nevertheless, he maintains hope that the UFC will eventually recognize and appreciate his hard work preparing for the fight.

Stephen Thompson expressed during “The MMA Hour” that his management is currently in communication with the UFC regarding compensation, but as of now, no agreement has been reached. He acknowledged that Dana White, the UFC president, is currently on vacation, which he believes is well-deserved considering White’s intense work ethic. Thompson remains optimistic that the UFC will eventually acknowledge his efforts and provide appropriate compensation. He emphasized that he diligently followed the terms of his contract and fulfilled all obligations expected of him.

Thompson further revealed the extensive preparations he made for the fight, involving the hiring of five coaches and a nutritionist. He mentioned that he would be disappointed if the UFC didn’t compensate him, as he believes he did everything right and adhered to the required standards while his opponent failed to do so. Despite the uncertainty, Thompson maintains a positive outlook, believing that the UFC will ultimately do right by him, which keeps him smiling in the face of the situation.

Regarding Stephen Thompson’s future plans, he is eager to get back into the Octagon after missing out on the recent opportunity. He has expressed his desire to fight on November 11 at UFC 295. However, Thompson has made it clear that he is not willing to be matched up against Michel Pereira due to Pereira’s failure to make weight for their previously scheduled bout.

Thompson stated that he already provided Pereira with the opportunity to face a seasoned veteran like himself. He saw it as a chance for Pereira to prove his worth to the UFC, showcase his skills, and potentially climb up the rankings. But Pereira’s inability to make weight has left Thompson with the impression that Pereira does not deserve such an opportunity. Given the circumstances, Thompson seems determined to move forward and seek another opponent for his next fight at UFC 295.

So what do you think of his attitude towards the present circumstance? Let us know in the comments!
