Makachaev’s Coach Prefers A Rematch With Volkanovski Over Gaethje After UFC 294

Javier Mendez is more interested in a rematch with Volkanovski than fighting Gaethje after UFC 294. Continue reading to find out why he has this preference.

The UFC lightweight championship is set for a rematch as Makhachev is scheduled to face Charles Oliveira in the main event on October 21 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Their previous encounter saw Makhachev secure victory by submitting Oliveira in the second round at UFC 280.

In the event of a successful outcome, Mendez reportedly favors a potential rematch between Makhachev and Volkanovski over a matchup with “BMF” champion Justin Gaethje. Gaethje’s contender status was reinforced by a recent knockout victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 291.

Mendez expressed his preference during an interview with Submission Radio, stating that he would prioritize a rematch with Alex Volkanovski after a potential successful fight against Charles Oliveira. Additionally, he mentioned his desire for Makhachev to secure the welterweight title following these matches.

In a closely contested lightweight title bout at UFC 284 in February, Featherweight champion Volkanovski provided a tough challenge for Makhachev. Despite Volkanovski’s belief that he had won the fight, Mendez elaborated on his intention for Makhachev to eliminate any uncertainties by defeating Volkanovski more decisively in a rematch.
Mendez elaborated on his perspective, explaining that his preference for a rematch with Alex stems from a sense of unresolved matters. He emphasised that there remains a lack of clarity surrounding their previous encounter, with a prevailing sense of uncertainty that needs to be addressed. Despite acknowledging the high expectations placed upon their initial fight, Mendez emphasised that he aimed to showcase their superiority definitively. He spoke of his personal desire to engage in this challenge, as facing Alex is a formidable test that he welcomes. This mirrors the current situation with the upcoming fight against Charles Oliveira.

So, do you agree with Mendez’s logic for the fight preference? Let us know in the comments!
