After a tight first round, Sterling was knocked out by O’Malley at 0:51 of Round 2 in the UFC 292 main event. His second knockout defeat halted his bantamweight title run and stopped a nine-fight winning streak.
Sterling expressed his feelings about the fight’s outcome during a post-fight press conference. He admitted that the situation was difficult, considering the quick turnaround and other factors, but he emphasized that he had no intention of making excuses for his performance.
The decisive sequence unfolded after Sterling was struck by a right hand and subsequently found himself in a challenging position as O’Malley aggressively pressed on. Eventually, Sterling turned onto his stomach, prompting referee Marc Goddard to intervene and halt the fight.
Despite experiencing a momentary lapse in memory about his location, Sterling said he was generally feeling alright. He believed he could have continued the fight for a bit longer, even though he didn’t resent Goddard’s decision.
Sterling shared his perspective, stating that he attempted to regain his footing by rolling over. He noted that once the referee stepped in, he was back in a composed state. He acknowledged that the referee’s judgment call was part of the sport and held no grudges against him, accepting the outcome as it unfolded.
Exemplifying good sportsmanship, Sterling acknowledged his opponent’s skill without diminishing the victory when it was appropriate. Yet, he clearly expressed his strong desire for a chance at a rematch, intending to prove his own capabilities. Sterling indicated his leaning toward the concept of a rematch, mentioning his uncertainty about the possible courses of action he could pursue. His main inclination would involve getting another chance to engage in the match with the aim of achieving definitive resolutions.
