Coach Javier Mendez Supports Islam Makhachev’s Decision To Bring Leon Edwards To UFC 294

There are multiple prospects for lightweight champ Islam Makhachev’s next fight. However, he still stands match-less. Makhachev hadn’t fought since February when he defeated featherweight titleholder Alexander Volkanovski by unanimous decision at UFC 284 in Australia. Ultimately, he’s set to return to action on Oct. 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, but no opponent has been announced as of yet.

So, continue reading to find out why the fighter roams lonely, waiting for an octagon match-up.

In recent times, Makhachev seemed destined for a rematch with Charles Oliveira, the former 155-pound champion whom he defeated by submission at UFC 280 in October last year. Oliveira solidified his case for a rematch by delivering an impressive finish against Beneil Dariush in June. However, just when it seemed like the rematch was set, Oliveira revealed that he wouldn’t be ready to face Makhachev in the next three months.

This unexpected development opened the door for Alexander Volkanovski to make his claim for a shot at redemption. Having returned to the 145-pound division, Volkanovski showcased his dominance with a remarkable defense against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290. Despite undergoing elbow surgery recently to address a lingering issue, Volkanovski made it clear that he would be fully healthy and prepared for a chance to avenge his loss against Makhachev at UFC 294, should the opportunity arise.

Anticipation builds as UFC 291 approaches, scheduled for July 29 in Salt Lake City. The highly anticipated “BMF” title fight between former interim UFC champions Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje is the center of attention. Given their formidable skills and the expected intensity of the bout, the victor is poised to establish a compelling argument for a title shot in the lightweight division. All eyes will be on this pivotal matchup as the mixed martial arts world eagerly awaits the outcome.

However, considering the demanding nature of such a fight, a quick turnaround for the next title defense in Abu Dhabi might be impractical.

As the lightweight division’s landscape remains uncertain, Islam Makhachev took the initiative to seize control of his own destiny. Recently, he issued a callout to none other than UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.

While Makhachev had expressed interest in becoming a dual-champion in the past, he initially aimed to establish his position as the lightweight champion first. Nevertheless, given the current circumstances, Makhachev’s callout of Edwards clearly demonstrates his eagerness to expedite his path to that goal.

According to Makhachev’s coach, if he expresses interest in facing Leon Edwards, it indicates a willingness to take on challenges. There aren’t many apparent challenges for him in the lightweight division. By requesting the fight with Edwards, Islam is making it clear that he wants to test himself against top opponents.

The coach believes that the opportunity might not have materialized if Islam hadn’t asked for a fight with Leon Edwards. Now, with Islam’s callout, the idea is firmly implanted in everyone’s minds.

Islam has previously mentioned his intentions to move up to the welterweight division at some point. Now, as other potential contenders have been dealt with, Leon Edwards stands out as the primary challenge for him. The coach is confident that Islam would be enthusiastic about taking on this challenge if the fight were to be arranged.

What do you guys think? Will he be able to stand his ground against Edwards or not? Let us know in the comments!
