Poirier and Gaethje will face off against each other in a five-round main event on July 29 at Delta Centre in Salt Lake City. Furthermore, this fight will be a rematch of their exciting 2018 Fight of the Year from UFC on FOX 29. Poirier won that fight by fourth-round TKO.
Now, the contenders will compete in a main pay-per-view event.
Furthermore, the UFC brass chose to up the stakes by reintroducing the “BMF” championship. This was following the retirement of original champion Jorge Masvidal from MMA combat earlier this year.
Poirier recently commented on the upcoming bout, claiming that the “BMF” title is appropriate for this clash despite what others think. He emphasized Gaethje’s and his strong track histories, stressing their involvement in spectacular and memorable battles. Poirier feels that with their unique backgrounds, it is evident that this will be an exceptional and highly anticipated contest.
He added that the money aspect was fine for him since he’s content with his contract status with the UFC. However, he enjoys the notion of adding another major trophy to his combat sports CV. Poirier confidently stated that he plans to emerge victorious in the fight and proudly wear the “BMF” belt around his waist.
He also shared his unexpected excitement about the opportunity to compete for the “BMF” belt. He admitted that he had never considered the possibility before, but now he finds it truly awesome. Poirier even expressed his desire to display the belt in his living room proudly. He made it clear that he doesn’t find the “BMF” belt foolish or pointless; he genuinely likes it.
Following the events of UFC 291, UFC commentator Daniel Cormier was already advocating for the winner of Poirier vs. Gaethje to defend the “BMF” crown. Poirier commented on this saying he hadn’t thought as far. However, he didn’t rule out the possibility either.
According to him, the outcome of his upcoming fight against Justin Gaethje holds significant implications. He feels that the winner should be next in line for a title shot after the winner of the Charles Oliveira vs. Beneil Dariush bout. Poirier acknowledges the accomplishments and skills of Dariush. He stated that if Dariush secured a victory, he should rightfully have a chance at the championship.
However, Poirier’s ultimate ambition is to hold multiple titles. He envisions a collection that includes an interim belt, the “BMF” belt, and the undisputed belt. Poirier is determined to achieve this feat and is ready to pursue it relentlessly.
