Ben Askren on Connor McGregor’s Fight Skills

Ben Askren is not impressed with Conor McGregor’s activity in the octagon!

McGregor and Michael Chandler are set to square off once Season 31 of “The Ultimate Fighter” concludes. McGregor hasn’t fought since breaking his leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. However, he’s been planning a comeback ever since. Per Askren, McGregor hasn’t shown any activity, indicating he’s eager to battle with the best again.

Ben Askren, a former professional MMA fighter, expressed concerns about Conor McGregor’s dedication to training. While acknowledging McGregor’s financial success, Askren believes that McGregor needs to prove himself as an elite fighter again. Askren mentioned on his show, “Funky & The Champ,” that in every video he sees of McGregor, he appears to be partying, dancing, and drinking. This has made Askren question whether McGregor still takes his fighting career seriously.

Askren also shared his skepticism about McGregor’s claims of fighting regularly in the future. McGregor recently stated that he intends to fight three or four times within the following year. However, Askren finds this highly unlikely, considering that McGregor has only fought four times in the past six years.

He believes McGregor’s statement to be “crazy talk” and even doubts whether McGregor will end up facing Michael Chandler, as has been suggested.

Askren’s co-host, Daniel Cormier, informed him that McGregor had submitted his first sample to the USADA. However, Askren wasn’t convinced. Ben Askren expressed his doubts about Conor McGregor’s commitment to drug testing. He believes McGregor has not actually provided a sample for testing.

Askren emphasized the importance of seeing McGregor fight someone and pointed out that his record hasn’t been impressive lately. This is because he has only won one out of his last four fights over the past six years. The sole victory was against Donald Cerrone. Askren also highlighted McGregor’s lack of activity, noting that he hasn’t competed since July 2021, nearly two years ago!

McGregor is the sport’s greatest celebrity and has already done a lot, including becoming the UFC’s first consecutive dual champion. Askren believes his finest days are beyond him.

According to Ben Askren, Conor McGregor still possesses grandiose aspirations. Also, he envisions himself as a top-tier fighter capable of winning another championship. Askren acknowledges that there is a possibility McGregor could achieve this. This is due to the unpredictable nature of fights involving Michael Chandler. Chandler also happens to be a former college teammate of Askren.

Askren recognizes that Chandler has the potential to defeat his opponents swiftly. Yet, he also tends to take risks that might result in his own downfall. McGregor, known for his powerful strikes, could capitalize on any mistakes made by Chandler.

Askren admits that he wishes for Chandler’s victory but acknowledges that the fight could go either way. In the event of a fight between McGregor and Chandler with an unpredictable outcome, McGregor could subsequently be thrown into a title fight.
