Tyson Fury Declines MMA Showdown With Jon Jones: ‘I’m Not A Cage Fighter, Mate’

In a recent social media video, Tyson Fury, the reigning boxing heavyweight champion, made it clear that he has no intentions of venturing into the realm of mixed martial arts. Responding to UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Fury conveyed his message directly to his potential opponent.

Fury addressed Jones, stating, “I see Jon Jones has voiced his thoughts. Jon, you mention me in a cage, but I must remind you that I’m a boxer, mate. In fact, I’m the best boxer out there. So, if you want to step into a boxing ring to fight me, you’re more than welcome. Let me know, and there’s no need to involve anyone else – no Dana, nobody. Just call me. This is a boxing match, and I call the shots in this game.”

While acknowledging Jones as a formidable fighter, Fury took a subtle jab at his opponent’s boxing abilities, remarking, “You’re a great fighter, Jon, but you certainly aren’t a boxer, that’s for sure.”

Fury’s response comes in the wake of a back-and-forth exchange between Fury and UFC commentator Joe Rogan, where Rogan expressed doubt regarding Fury’s chances if he were to face Jones. Fury’s response to Rogan prompted Jones to enter the fray on Twitter, issuing a challenge to Fury and suggesting he contact UFC president Dana White to arrange the fight.

However, this situation exposes the inherent challenge when UFC fighters and boxers engage in verbal sparring. Jones is contractually bound to the UFC, which restricts his fighting activities solely to the octagon unless authorized by the organization. On the other hand, Fury enjoys more flexibility, as he is not bound by such contractual obligations. Consequently, the exchanges often remain confined to mere words.
